D-Journey

The Spring-Summer 2025 Ready-to-Wear runway introduced the D-Journey in a material that had not been seen in the line before: crinkled calfskin. Unlike the smooth leathers and jacquard canvases that defined earlier versions, this calfskin is deliberately textured — wrinkled through a finishing process that gives each bag a slightly different grain pattern. No two pieces are identical, and that variation is the point.

The crinkled surface absorbs light instead of reflecting it, producing a matte, almost powdered appearance that shifts subtly across the bag’s panels. Overlaid on this organic texture is the Flat Macrocannage topstitching — a scaled-up version of the Cannage motif that Dior adopted from the Napoleon III chairs in the house’s original salons. The diamond-shaped stitching runs across the bag in bold lines, the precision of the machine stitching contrasting directly with the irregularity of the crinkled leather beneath it.

Black is the appropriate color for this treatment. It lets the texture and the macrocannage do the work without chromatic distraction. The “Christian Dior Paris” pull tabs on the side pockets are rendered in the same crinkled calfskin, their embossed lettering catching light differently than the surrounding surface. Inside, the bag is lined in suede calfskin, adding a smooth counterpoint to the textured exterior. At 25.5 cm wide and 14.5 cm deep, the Small D-Journey includes adjustable top handles and a removable strap. The crinkled finish is forgiving in daily use — minor scuffs blend into the existing texture as opposed to standing out. For anyone who values surface interest and material honesty, this is the most compelling version of the D-Journey to date.
